SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — If you’re someone who measures life in airport layovers, the new direct route by United Airlines between San Juan and Denver launching on October 29, 2023 is a breath of fresh air. This new segment is a bridge across the skies connecting the tropical landscape of Puerto Rico and the mountains of Colorado with a Boeing 737 MAX 9 aircraft.
Bringing Communities Closer
United Airlines introduces a new daily non-stop venture between Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan and Denver International Airport (DIA, for the Coloradans), cutting down the flight duration to a reasonable 5.5 to 6.5 hours. Flights depart Denver at 9:50AM Mountain Time and San Juan at 2:30PM Atlantic Standard Time. The one-way tickets are priced from $252, while round-trip fares start at $503. The 737 MAX 9 boasts five rows of first class, six rows of “Economy Plus,” and twenty-six rows of economy across its thirty-seven rows.
Artist and recent Puerto Rico transplant, Dawn Frost, among the first paying passengers on this route, shares, “This is going to make it so much easier, and quicker, to see my son in Colorado. And I know several other people in Puerto Rico who have moved here recently from Colorado, so I expect we’ll all be flying United now.” Echoing the sentiments of a larger community, Ms. Frost’s experience highlights how this aerial conduit is a game-changer for many, adding over 50,000 seats out of Puerto Rico annually, thus enriching the region’s economic landscape.
Unlocking New Destinations
United’s wings are stretching farther, marking this route the farthest west any scheduled flight from Puerto Rico has ever flown. It’s more than a Denver connection; it’s a portal to United’s flights to the West Coast, Hawaii, and Japan, bringing a myriad of destinations closer to Puerto Rico’s heart.
Moreover, passengers from the western United States can now reach the Caribbean more quickly. Puerto Rico, an enticing island destination that Americans can visit with just a driver’s license, now also serves as a convenient hub for direct flights across the Caribbean from San Juan’s airport. Additionally, San Juan is a favored embarkation point for numerous cruise lines.
United’s Bold Stride Forward
Patrick Quayle, United’s Senior Vice President of Global Network Planning and Alliances, noted in a press release, “United has the most flights to the most destinations across the Atlantic and we’re now giving our customers even more flexibility and choice when planning their trips abroad.” This route augments United’s offering to transatlantic travelers, now extending to thirty-eight different cities.
On October 29, the launching of this route will symbolize the shrinking distances and renewed connections between these regions. The San Juan – Denver route, more than just a flight, underscores United Airlines’ commitment to fostering connectivity, extending an invitation to explore a world that’s coming closer together, one flight at a time.
And as former Coloradan, Dawn Frost, sagely noted, it also “makes it easier to get back for a craft beer fix.”
